What is the Scottish Rite?

The Scottish Rite is neither Scottish in origin nor a rite in the religious sense. Rather, the Scottish Rite is one of the two areas (the other is the York Rite) a Master Mason may select after completing the three degrees of Blue Lodge Masonry:

Entered Apprentice

Fellowcraft

Master Mason

While Master Mason is the most exalted degree a member can hold, the Scottish Rite gives members the opportunity to explore Masonry even further through a series of thirty additional degrees. Each degree offers information and messages on various Masonic traditions, and for that reason, Scottish Rite Masonry is known as the "College of Freemasonry."

The ultimate goal of the Scottish Rite is the moral and spiritual development of mankind.
