What is the Shrine?

The Mystic Shrine is a Masonic fraternity of 800,000 members throughout North America. While Scottish and York Rite bodies exist throughout the world, Shrine is a uniquely North American experience and is especially active in the United States.

Shrine was formed in New York City, in 1872, by a few Masons who wanted a group that was more lighthearted than Masonry's Craft Lodge. One member of the group suggested its Middle Eastern theme (then quite mysterious) with fezzes and other Arabic iconography. The Shrine instantly became and remains highly popular in the United States. While Shrine is known as "the playground of Masonry," its members combine a spirit of fun and brotherhood and work hard to benefit those in need. The Shrine's main focus is aiding infirm children by funding and maintaining its famous network of Shrine hospitals and burn centers for children in financial need.
